Lost?

I fix the problem and have completed the video!

It's about the journey of a pixel's search for a better picture.

Coldplay - Lost? from messytimbo on Vimeo.

So this was meant to be entered for the coldplay lost? Video contest. the competition ran for a month but me and lyd made this in the final week of the contest, it was always going to be a challenge to get it in on time but if it wasn’t for my flash file bugging while outputting we would have made it. I was a little disappointed that we didn't get it submitted in time, so I left it for while before trying to sort it out. Fortunately I found a way around my exporting problem.

There’s soooooooooo much I would change about it, I won't go into detail, but there's a lot :), however i'm not willing to go back in and try and fix them, I need to be getting on with loads of other things and this was only meant to be a quick, see what we could do in one week kinda project, so...it is what it is. But what I will say is I learnt an incredible amount from making it, so I'm very pleased about that.

Wating till the shine wears off...

I attempted to make a video for the coldplay lost competition, the deadline was the first the of December. It came close to the wire and I completed the animation, but I miss the deadline because I had trouble with outputting files from flash. Oh how I loath computers....

This is the end frame from the video

when i get it sorted, I'll post the final video.

God, How i Envy You

I was talking to a new pal of mine Dele, who I've met while working at Partizan, and he said while looking at the sketches on my blog, that he liked the way i had laid them out because it looked sequential, like a comic. It made me think back to a conversation i had With Kristian Antonelli, Kristian was talking about making a sequential strip out of his daily sketches.

So thought I'd give it a whirl. I've added some text to glue the drawings together.

I'd like to here your thoughts, and see if you think it's clear.

I might try this out for a while. I was getting a bit board just posting random sketches.

surprise surprise

Hey
i thought I'd better post something quickly so that i can make my one a week post.. HEER
RR HRM...

This is my first every bits of animation done about 3 or so years ago, and is also the first and last time i made stop motion animation.

I made it with no story in mind, just wanted to play about and see what i could create. I had and lot of fun making the set and building the toys, which bar the big one, are from kinder eggs. what can i say, i love chocolate!

New internet connection + new sketch book = new post

I'm halfway through the animation on my little short, but it's been put on hold for a couple of weeks because I'm helping out on a music video for Partizan's animation department. it's going well, and I'm learning loads and meeting really great people.

I'm gonna try and work all weekend on the short. I've still not got any ideas for a name for it yet, any ideas?

Sketches

answer from the last post.

Chicken Boo from the animaniacs (if you don't know this character youtube him, i think he's one of the best characters of all time! but he's kinda slipped under the radar)
Bart Simpson
Robbie from Dinosaurs
The face of the Iron Giant

i did think that there was one more...but i've forgotten which character it was.

if you look at all these characters you'll understand. hahahaha

Subconscious Chick

I've started drawing this Character which I've named Chick Chickson, and i realised that he's the mesh of about five characters i like. i had no intention of ripping them off, it was completely a subconscious move. I almost didn't post it because i thought people might of thought i was copying them. but i think it's pretty interesting how our minds work, so i decided to share.

see if you can guess what characters they are?

Animatic Critique Please?

Hey ya

i just got back from Oslo in Norway and i had a great time. i tried the night before i left to post this animatic but the file i uploaded in vimeo was skipping and stuff when it played. I didn't have time to fix it, which sucked because i don't wanna start animating it until i get a bit of a critique on it. I was hoping when i got back i'd have some good feedback, make some changes based on the feedback and start to work on it. but as it hasn't worked out that way...bummer.

anyways, feel totally free to give any thoughts you have on the timing, the staging, or poses. I'm totally open to any suggestion you'd like to make.

i tried to make the animatic quite detailed in terms of movemet, i think it will make it easier when it come to animating it in flash.

I've gotta bust my ass into gear now coz i need a job badly! expect to see more animation in the very near future

plus I'll post up some of the drawings i did in Oslo, there won't be very many because i didn't do a hell of a lot because most days i was trying to deal with a hang over.

little man (UPDATE)

trying to do some nice flash stuff for my showreel (coz i suck at flash, to many ways to do things). i really like those Robinson ad's, they're really nice. i think it's flash? but if it is, i haven't got a clue how the make it look like pastels? if anyone could shed some light, shine it my way.

anyways the ad made me wanna do a my designs in a pastel style.

Here's a little drawing i did so i could make a flash version.

and here's the flash version, i tried to give it a pastel kinda look by drawing the lines in illustrator first, but i think that's gonna be tricky keep that up when i'm animating...sigh...if any ones got any good ideas i'm all ears, or as i'd be reading it, i'm all eyes.

i don't like this version as much, i think something has very much got lost in translation...
any feedback would be great.

Slow Train

This is a Music Video i animated on for the an Australian musician called Alex Lloyd.

it was directed by a Friend and ex class mate of mine called Kim Alexander. Kim is one of the hardest working people i have ever met. not only did she conceived the concept, design, storyboard, animate most of and direct it, but she also done all the post production work as well...oh and i forgot to mention that she did all that while working full time! she's amazing, and i think it looks amazing . Also it was put together in only 8 weeks, which i think makes it even more amazing.

I animated two parts of it, the bus stop bit and the sun set bit.

I hope you like it.

Thank you Kim for giving me the opportunity to work on such a great project!

p.s here's a link to the youtube page so you can watch a high quality version. the high res option is below the player.

Compositing?

Been practising my After Effects skills today. I'd forgot what a useful program it is!

got inspired to do something in it after i watch a beautifully animated ad which was made using flash and after effects.

http://www.troiscube.com/adobe/

check it out! coz they kinda teach you how it was done, not so much the after effects side, but the flash they do. you can even download the fla. files!

so i took that old bit of flash animation i did and quickly drew and back drop of London, cut it up in photoshop and put it into A.E to see what i could come up with. i played about with the 3d field, lighting and even put in a camera move.

it's not much but i learnt a bit today. so I'm happy

Monkey: Journey to the West...End

I'm a massive fan of Jamie Hewlett, i love his work so much. and when i first saw the art work for the journey to the west stage production that he was doing i was blown away, such a great project, also the performers that are in the show are amazing! I've seen clips, they're killer!

I've wanted to see this since last year. but the only u.k date up until now was in Manchester, and at the time i couldn't make it.

But i found out recently that there was 7 night book at Royal Opera House in London's west end. so I've been waiting for the tickets to go on sale...and at 10am they finally did!

I got 2 Tickets! woo hoo!

Man, i can't friggin wait!

Ah! to be young again...

Went with my friends Leon and Amber to pick up their son Kye from school the other day. When I saw Kye i put out my hand so he could slap me a little low five, but instead he made better use of my hand by putting his sweater in it, and then ran off to play on the slide. I drew him running off.

Children move to fast so these are the only half decent drawings I did.

Here are some other daily sketches.

How about yes!?

“Life is just a series of peaks and troughs. And you don’t know whether you’re in a trough until you’re climbing out, or on a peak until you’re coming down. And that’s it you know, you never know what’s round the corner. But it’s all good. ‘If you want the rainbow, you’ve gotta put up with the rain.’ Do you know which philosopher said that?... Dolly Parton... And people say she’s just a big pair of tits.”

just found an old sketchbook....

funny...I'd completely forgotten about this one. it's the sketchbook before the one that I'm just about to finish, i must have got through this sketchbook really fast. i think it's better than the one I'm finishing up at the moment. I'm not posting many of the sketches, just the ones that i like. I'm looking at them know, and I'm thinking if this is the best pick of an entire sketch book...I've got a lot of work to do!

comments most welcome, critiques please! don't feel shy :)

THE RING

After looking at these drawing and seeing the rings in them, within 7 days you'll have probably forgotten all about them, because they're not to good.

Yeah so the model had this plastic ring that she was holding (whoop-de-do). Also in this session we were instructed to try out single line drawings with both are right and left hands. There is also some 1 and 2 minute warm ups as well. urrr...feedback is welcome...sorry for not posting last week...etcetera, etcetera

Don’t know why but I’m going to leave you with a rather inspiring quote by truly great thinker, a man of true wisdom, a great philosopher, a real intellect.

"There are three rules that I live by: never get less than 12 hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady who's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick with that, everything else is cream cheese."

Data

Inspired by and pretty much told by Kristian Antonelli, I decided to draw Data from the Goonies.

I really like the way Kristian is colouring short round at the moment, so being the original guy that i am, I’ve copied him hahahaha, poorly, hahaha :)

Pointers please?!

life drawing again.

This was the life drawing that i did 2 weeks ago. In the session we were advised to try and do a drawing with your left hand. Or if you were left handed do one with your right. The idea being, that the drawing won’t have your normal level of control to it. The results I found were interesting. i found that without the normal control level, my drawing seem loose and i think had more energy to it.

i thought great! Try to not use so much control with your right hand, and use the control for the details and I’ve found i new way of drawing. Wrong! as soon as i got that power back with my other hand, I completely forgot about that idea.

In fact the drawing I did after looks especially stiff and over worked i think.

It would be great to get some feedback on this session, so i can apply it to my life drawing this week.

Thanks

Sketch books and animation!

It’s been a couple of months since I’ve posted any of my sketch book stuff. I’ve been sketching more than ever at the moment. This post contains my favourite drawing from my last 3 sketchbook's. There’s so much more that i could have posted, but I couldn’t be bothered to scan anymore. I’ve just started a new sketch book so I thought it would be a good time to post from the previous 3 books.
I hope you like.

And yes, some animation. It’s one of the first things I’ve done in ages, and It’s pretty crappy. I was mucking around in flash and I liked what I was doing, so I kept on wanting to see it a bit more refined. Thus what started as a square with a circle for a head turn in to a caricature off me, which is ultimately a square with a head...which is circular? but now i don't like it much. (but when do i ever like my work :) )
It’s got a lightbox and a chair in the background, and i was toying with the notion that he was going to grab the chair and start doing something at the light box, but I think it’s a bit cliché. So i think I’m going to scrap the background. If anyone’s got a idea about what he (I) could do next I’m all ears...unlike my caricature which has no ears.

Preggers!

This week our model was a pregnent woman but half way through the session she started to feel faint, it was a bit scary, i think she passed out at one point, so someone had to call an ambalance!
but when she left she was fine, i think she was just feeling a little weak.

they called another model to come so we could finish off the session which was amazing because i thought that would be it for the night.

here's the new bloke below

i'm gonna post again this week, so stay tuned!
